International speaker and New York Times bestselling author, Gabrielle Bernstein attempts to “wake up as many people as possible to their connection to faith and joy” in her well received book titled, ‘The Universe Has Your Back’.
I had been following Gabrielle on Instagram for a few years now and I first bought her deck of cards also titled ‘The Universe Has Your Back’ back in 2019 before finding her book shortly afterwards.
The Universe Has Your Back Review
Written in the first person, Gabrielle guides you to riding the swell of your energy and true power,” through individual spiritual lessons that connect to the universe.
This book is just like another great read, life changing travel story or enigmatic person that enters your life. It’ll enamour you because you chose it to. How we choose to view something, a situation or person can determine the eventual outcome of our own mindset and our perception of that person or situation. It is only after reading chapters in this book like chapter 1: you have hidden power, and chapter 3: you are always being guided, even if it doesn’t feel like it, and chapter 10: you are the universe, that helps hold your eyes up and the kind of future you want to lead, that I started to switch an old view I had.
Through her own personal stories and lessons- hailed as New York Times’ ‘new role model’, Gabrielle mentors you through each chapter of the book. The mentorship really comes across when she retells her own personal battles with depression and addiction and how she overcame them. During the first chapter Gabrielle jumps straight in and talks through her teenage years and about how her mother introduced her to the powers of meditation.
Meditation is a key element throughout the book and is a practice I like to weave into my life. She covers a number of my favourite techniques and styles of meditation which you can find in chapters; 1, 3, 9, and 10).
A mantra I really connected with was this:
“Humee Hum, Tumee Tum, Wahe Guru; I am Thine, in Mine, Myself, Wahe Guru.”
“This meditation celebrates the connection we have to others through our shared connection to the universe…” (p137). Isn’t that beautiful? I’ve been practicing meditation for a few years now and I like to use it in the morning to reset my mind ready for the day. Especially when I’ve got a lot to do that particular day, I feel starting it right with both a mantra that speaks to you and a healthy balanced diet helps.
Another interesting element, is the useful breathing exercises like on page 149 where you begin the Kundalini meditation in the mudra (hand position) position:
“Breath: breathe consciously, long and deep.
Time: sit in this meditation for three minutes.
The end: inhale deeply. Hold your breath for 15 seconds. Exhale. Inhale deeply. Feel in your connection to the universe. Hold for 15 seconds. Exhale. Inhale deep. Feel the taste of the sweetness of life. Hold for 15 seconds. Exhale…”
There is lots of evidence to support breathing exercises being beneficial to you besides learning to sing. Fun fact; I’m a classically trained singer and it was always important to practice my breathing for both control and to support my voice from the diaphragm and not my throat, as it can damage your vocal-chords if you don’t support them. Controlled breathing exercises like ‘coherent breathing‘ and what Gabrielle details in the book; ‘long deep breathing’ is a great way to help reduce stress. Additionally, I enjoyed reading about the different practices like the Kundalini practice, where you use the yogic breathing.
Love is one of the main themes of ‘The Universe Has Your Back’ and I feel her mission in writing the book was to lead her readers into connecting back to love and encourage them to practice everyday. Whether that practice was self reflection, meditation or our perception of others around us. Gabrielle delivers a guided experience for those who wish to explore how they can live a fulfilled life, instead of simply chasing it. She ends the book with the apt line,
“All you have to do is choose love, spread light, and know that the universe has your back.”
This book is ideal for an adult who is open to meditation, mentorship and energies. I enjoyed this book for both its educational and teaching purposes. It’s always the perfect time to read!
