Laura Gilmour, 22 from Glasgow, UK, has co-ordinated time out of her busy schedule to talk about how to be a successful fashion blogger.
LB: Hi Laura, lovely speaking with you today. You currently have over 47K of Instagram followers, how did that come about?
Laura: If I am completely honest my Instagram following came out of nowhere! I was in my final year of uni and I started working in a nightclub which meant I met a new group of fab, fun girls – as a result I started to go out a lot more often. Like most girls I love a lil outfit pic before a night out, so every night out I was sure to get a snap. My posts became more and more frequent due to the amount I was going out and as a result some small companies started to contact me. When these companies began to repost my images I noticed my following started to grow. Blogging was something I completely fell into – but I’m so grateful for the opportunity and to everyone who continues to support me 🙂
LB: Your Instagram has been blowing up with the cutest and latest summer fashion from your holiday in Marbella, what’s been your favourite outfit and why?
Laura: Firstly, Marbs was amazing!! If you ever get the opportunity you must go! My favourite outfit had to be the In The Style X Sarah Ashcroft orange satin mini. The colour was so perfect for summer, especially with a tan (even although mines was fake and topped up with lots of bronzed highligher haha!). The style is super sleek but slightly sexy with the thigh high split. I paired it with gold strappy sandals and big hoops, oh and LOTS of glow!
LB: When did you first start blogging?
Laura: I’d say I only properly started blogging in October last year which seems like forever ago now – it’s been an exciting time, especially these last few months.
LB: You work full-time at ‘Oh Polly!’ on PR, Collaborations and Social Media, how long have you been at the company and what’s your advice for anyone wanting to get into PR?
Laura: It’s been almost a year now since I graduated uni with a Multimedia Journalism degree and started working at Oh Polly. It’s such a fast paced environment and everything is forever changing but I thrive on it and love the fact that everyday is different. If PR is an industry you want to get into then you’ve got to be prepared to put the work in – get as much experience as possible as employers always look for a candidate who has worked in the field before and can prove they are the right person for the job! Internships and work experience are your friend – so make sure you get lots of it while you still can!
LB: Are there any hacks to taking the perfect selfie?
Laura: I am still learning how to take the perfect selfie but one thing I do know is lighting is EVERYTHING. Daylight is the best as it’s the most natural, however if you are like me and live in Scotland – a place where the sun rarely shines – invest in a ring light. You won’t regret it!
Also you can’t forget about angles – it’s all about knowing what angle works best for you!
LB: Do you have any advice for future fashion bloggers?
Laura: Be Yourself. I know it sounds cliche but there’s so many people out there now who are trying to make a name for themselves on Instagram, so you have to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Remember noone can do you, better than you!
Don’t take it too serious. Don’t get caught up on likes and followers, as long as you enjoy what you’re doing that’s all that matters.
And finally, don’t stress over negativity. I’ve been pretty lucky as I haven’t received much abuse but there’s always one person that has to be rude. What’s the saying again – ‘You can be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, and there’s still going to be somebody who hates peaches’ – so don’t waste time worrying about what others think!
LB: What’s your three fav pieces in your wardrobe right now and why?
Laura: My 3 fav pieces – that’s a hard one!
I’d have to say my Ride or Die black biker jacket by Beggining Boutique. A leather jacket should be a staple in any girls closet and I’m particularly obsessed with this one due to the slogan on the back! The fit is perfect too!
T-shirt dresses!! Any colour, it doesn’t matter I love them. I love to cut them myself to make them a lil more personal and then pair with strappy heels or over the knees for a more edgy look. They are just super comfy, yet chic- OBSESSED.
Anything satin and I’m like I NEED that. It’s become my new obsession – I wore so many satin pieces on holiday! They just make you feel super glam which I love, especially for a special occasion!
LB: You were recently at the ‘In the Style – Sarah Ashcroft’ launch, how was that?
Laura: Firstly, the event was amazing! They ticked all the boxes when it came to the little details and every guest had such a fab time. I went to the event with Jess Hunt and Polly Marchant, who are both so lovely – we had a meal before hand then headed to the venue for yummy cocktails, an amazing gifting suite, fun catwalks and a dance with the fellow bloggers! All in all it was a great night 🙂
LB: Are you working on any exciting projects you can tell us about?
Laura: I don’t have anything in the pipeline at the moment – I’m just enjoying posting my images and seeing where things go – but who know’s what the future holds!
LB: Thank you for letting me interview you! Good luck with your blogging!
Laura: Thank you so much for considering me as an interviewee!
